ONION AS A HAIR TREATMENT
For hundreds of years the onion has been one of the most used hair remedies to treat hair problems or simply to improve its appearance. There are many properties attributed to it, such as the acceleration of hair growth, the elimination of hair grease, the prevention of hair loss or the delay in the appearance of grey hairs.
DIOSCÓRIDES ANAZARBEO (c.40–c.90)
Dioscorides was a doctor and botanist in Ancient Greek whose magnum opus DE MATERIA MÉDICA became the benchmark medicine manual for more than 16 centuries. This work is a treatise which includes information and studies on medicinal plants, animal products and minerals. Dioscorides carried out one of the greatest tasks in research and collection of data to create the best pharmaceutical guide in ancient times, translated into multiple languages and widely distributed up to the 16th century. In De Materia Médica, it describes the properties of the onion and many of its benefits, also including hair remedies, “by friction, for bald heads, it provokes the hair quicker than the false sponge”.
JOHN GERARD (London, 1545–1612)
In 1597 John Gerard, English naturist, herbalist and civil surgeon, published Great Herball or General Historie Of Plants a book dedicated to the study and analysis of different plants where he describes the characteristics of each one of them and their properties. It became consolidated as one of the most important and consulted books of its time. In chapter 93, page 171, the author refers to the onion and its properties with the following comment: “the juice of onions anointed upon a bald head in the sun bringeth the hair again very speedily“
Currently there is a study published in the Journal of Dermatology and in PUBLMED carried out by Dr. Sharquie KE where he examined the results of onion juice applied to the scalp on 23 people who suffered from alopecia areata. Onion juice was applied to the scalps of these 23 people twice per day for two months. The participants started to experience hair growth after just two weeks of treatment. After four weeks, hair regeneration was seen in 17 people and in 6 weeks, the growth of hair was shown in 20 people. The study concluded, after examining the results, that the use of onion juice as a homemade and natural remedy for people with alopecia areata, had a very beneficial effect.
Even today, there are many accounts online in which many men and women have used the properties of onion as an aid to speed up hair growth or eliminate grease or dandruff. These accounts can be found very extensively on YouTube, the Internet, forums, magazines, websites or even many beauty secrets published by different high traffic blogs, where they try to show to benefits of onion as an effective hair remedy, even insisting that hair can grow 2.5 cm in one month, far above the typical average.
